Glasgow Regeneration Program Soars with Latest Developments

Posted on 29th July 2013

As one of the UK’s  most prominent cities, it might not be a huge surprise to learn that Glasgow City Council have recently confirmed a huge £6 billion worth of development is now taking place in the area.  With recent investment drives and Government backed programs, not to mention the impending 2014 Commonwealth Games, confidence in the city as an opportunity for growth has been boosted with palpable vivacity across a number of new projects, with new sporting facilities, hotels and office developments featuring predominantly in the plan.

Purportedly, £103.6 million of hotel development is underway with many new businesses opening recently and many more under construction or planned for the near future. In a report by the council’s regeneration and economic policy development committee, they revealed a number of new hotel projects springing up opposite the new, 12,000 seat SSE Hydro Arena, opening in September.

Of course, with the Hydro offering some of the biggest names in entertainment right from its opening night, it will act as a feeder for the new nearby hotels, helping to drive long term, sustainable business and interest to the city.

Similarly, a recent focus on office space investment has also spurred on the hotel development craze. With a huge £597m injected directly into premium office buildings and space, it is of course the aim that the businesses moving into these new buildings will be largely catered for by the surrounding hotels. A number of retail units will also become available in one such development, an 11-storey project that will offer panoramic views of Glasgow for businesses taking up the office space on the upper floors, with its modern shopping opportunities below. Seemingly it’s a marked development drive across all sectors.

One of the deciding factors for the go-ahead on many of the new constructs was the Business Premises Renovation Allowance, a Government scheme that offers 100% tax relief for commercial property development in cases where the building in question hasn’t been used for more than a year.

With Glasgow already a thriving, bustling metropolis, these latest developments are set to bring the city into the 21st Century and offer businesses and residents alike yet more reason to move and stay in the area.
